We all know that feeling when things in the bedroom start to feel a little…routine. The same old positions, the same old locations, the same old toys can make you wonder where that spark went – and how to get it back.
Spicing things up and trying something new can help with that feeling of new discovery – or help prevent you getting stuck in the first place. And there’s no need to be shy about it – experiment, have fun, and let your imaginations run wild! After all, isn’t that what good sex is all about?
Pegging is a great way to mix up your sex life and add a little extra spice to your bedroom play.
But firstly, what exactly is pegging?
Straight answer: it’s one person using a strap-on dildo to penetrate their partner’s anus. The term “pegging” was popularised by sex columnist Dan Savage, and the act has become increasingly popular in recent years. While pegging may be seen as taboo by some, it can actually be a very fun and satisfying experience for both partners. The anus is a very sensitive area and sensual play feels amazing there. For opposite-sex couples, pegging also reverses the traditional gender roles in the bedroom and that sort of power play can be a sexual thrill in and of itself. If you’re traditionally more a recipient of penetration, pegging can let you take on a more… dominant role in the bedroom.
How to ask for pegging
So you’re curious about pegging and think it might be something you and your partner would enjoy? Great! Asking your partner for a new sexual experience can feel daunting, but there’s no need to be nervous. The most important thing is to communicate openly with your partner and be respectful of their boundaries. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Do your research
Learn more about what pegging involves and what you might enjoy about it (well done, you’re already completing the first step reading this article!). You could even try watching a pegging scene together or reading erotica that features pegging to get an idea of what pegging is all about. This will not only help you get turned on, but it can also help get the conversation flowing with your partner.
Consider why you want to try it
Next, take some time to think about why you want to try pegging. Do you want to explore your dominant side? Or maybe you’re curious about anal play? Be honest with yourself and your partner about what you’re hoping to get out of the experience.
Be direct and honest with your partner
When you’re ready to talk to your partner, be direct and honest about what you’re interested in trying. Try to find a moment when you’re both relaxed and comfortable – sometimes talking about it outside of the bedroom or a sexually charged moment can really help. Let them know that you respect their boundaries and that you’re open to hearing their concerns or fantasies as well. Hopefully, with everything going well you’ll be well on your way to enjoying some mind-blowing pegging action with your partner.
How to prepare for pegging
There are a few things you’ll need in order to get started. Most importantly you need a willing and consenting partner. Once you and your partner are happy and ready to go you’ll need a strap-on dildo. There are plenty of different types and sizes to choose from, so take your time picking out the perfect one for you and your partner. Consider the size and shape that you are both going to be comfortable with. You’ll also need some lube – lots of lube!
Although it may not be the most romantic thing to think about, preparing your body for pegging is important to help you enjoy the experience. Here are a few things you can do to get yourselves ready:
Start with cleanliness
Make sure you and your partner are thoroughly clean before starting. This means showering and paying extra attention to cleaning the anal area. You may even want to use an enema or douche to make sure everything is squeaky clean down there.
A little apprehensive about using a douche? Read our guide to anal douching for step-by-step instructions.
Apply lubricant liberally
Lubrication is key for comfortable anal sex, so make sure you use plenty of it. Apply it generously to both the dildo and your partner’s anus, and don’t be afraid to reapply as needed. It can also be a good idea to make sure you have some condoms on hand. This isn’t technically required, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

Go slow
Unlike some other forms of intercourse, anal sex requires a bit more time to warm up. Take things slowly at first, and make sure you’re keeping communication up with your partner about what feels good and what doesn’t.
You can even start with something smaller than a dildo, like fingers or a small butt plug. Insert it slowly until it feels good. Then add more lube and continue playing!
Once you’re both ready you can move on to penetration, and with a little patience, you’ll be enjoying backdoor fun in no time!Need more info? Check out our step-by-step guide on how to prepare for anal.
Pegging sex positions
Feeling prepped, ready and limber? Great!
If you’re ready to explore the wonderful world of pegging, here are a few suggestions for beginner-friendly pegging positions to help you get started.
Doggy
The old faithful. Doggy is a great beginner move for those who are new to the pegging scene. Start with the receiver on all fours on top of the bed. The giver can then ever so slowly begin to insert the dildo inside of their partner.
Communication is key so make sure you let each other know what’s working and what isn’t. Take the pace and depth slow and low to begin with, but when you’re feeling more comfortable you can begin to amp things up!
Take a seat
A seated position is another great beginner move because it allows the receiver to be able to control the depth and speed. Let the giver sit down on the edge of the bed or chair, and then the receiver can straddle them on top while facing each other. The receiver can now take control and set the rhythm.
Leg spread
This position will start with the receiver laying on their back with their legs spread, and the giver will lay over the top and insert the strap-on inside of them. What seems like a very basic position actually allows for a bit of extra fun. The receiver will have their hands free to masturbate as they are receiving from their partner, and the additional eye contact will make it feel much more intimate.
Pegging positions will end up being very interchangeable with anal sex positions as well, so if you need anymore inspiration you can find our list here.
