Thinking about trying a big dildo? Going bigger can be exciting, but it’s not just a matter of grabbing the largest toy you can find and hoping for the best. Length, girth and overall shape can all change how a toy feels, so a little planning can make the experience a lot more comfortable and a lot more enjoyable. In this guide, the team at Wild Secrets breaks down how to work your way up to bigger dildos, from choosing the right size to using enough lube and looking after your toys properly.
First, work out what “bigger” actually means

Before sizing up, it helps to know what you’re actually sizing up. “Bigger” can mean more length, more girth or a bit of both. Overall length measures the toy from end to end, while insertable length tells you how much of it is actually designed to go inside. Width or diameter measures straight across the toy, while girth or circumference measures all the way around.
And those numbers can make a bigger difference than appearances suggest. A long dildo can still be relatively slim, while a shorter toy with extra girth may feel like a much more noticeable step up. Rather than relying on labels like “large” or “XXL dildo”, check the measurements of a toy you already find comfortable and use those as your starting point.
From there, think about what you actually want more of. If you’re looking for a deep dildo, insertable length may matter most. If you’re shopping for a large dildo because you want a fuller feeling, girth is probably the measurement to watch.

Size up gradually

Once you know which measurement you want more of, avoid jumping straight from your usual toy to something dramatically bigger. A smaller step up gives you a better chance to work out whether the extra size actually feels good, rather than simply becoming overwhelming.
It can also help to change one thing at a time. If you want to experiment with more girth, for example, you don’t necessarily need a lot more length as well. Keeping the jump manageable makes it easier to figure out what your body responds to and what you actually enjoy.
And if something feels uncomfortable, slow down or stop. There’s no prize for pushing through discomfort, and there’s definitely no finish line where everyone eventually “graduates” to a big dildo. Bigger isn’t automatically better. The right size is the one that feels comfortable, pleasurable and right for you.
What are the different types of extra-large dildos?
Extra-large dildos come in all shapes, sizes and styles, so “bigger” doesn’t always mean the same thing. Depending on what you’re looking for, some of the main options include:
- Extra-girthy dildos — Designed with greater circumference rather than necessarily being extremely long.
- Extra-long dildos — Put the emphasis on length and may appeal to shoppers specifically looking for a long dildo.
- Realistic dildos — Feature anatomical shaping and detailing, often paired with softer, real-feel materials.
- Flexible dildos — Have more bend or give, which can make a larger toy easier to position.
- Suction-cup dildos — Feature a base designed to attach to a suitable smooth surface for hands-free positioning.
- Harness-compatible dildos — Have a base designed to work with compatible strap-on harnesses.
- Novelty and extreme-size toys — Sit at the far end of the size spectrum. Some are so enormous that they can work as novelty or display pieces rather than conventional toys.
When “going bigger” gets seriously big

Once you start comparing measurements, you quickly realise just how broad the word “big” can be. The Girthmasterr dildo, for example, measures 8.5 inches long with a 7-inch circumference, showing just how much girth can change the experience even without extreme length. If you’re ready to take things up another notch, The Great American Challenge comes in at 15 inches long with a 9-inch circumference.
Speaking of size, we have to mention the Moby huge dildo. At 3 feet long and over 23 kgs (51 lbs), it’s obviously not designed for internal use. But it does make one hell of a centrepiece for a party or a wildly over-the-top display at home!
How to measure the girth from the width
Not every product lists the girth or circumference, so sometimes you’ll need to work it out yourself. The good news is, it’s pretty simple.
If you know the width or diameter, multiply it by 3.14 to get the approximate circumference.
For example, if a dildo is 2 inches wide:
2 × 3.14 = 6.28 inches around
That gives you a much better idea of how full a toy may feel than width alone. Just make sure the product is listing the diameter, not another measurement such as radius. And because some toys aren’t perfectly round from top to bottom, treat the result as a useful estimate rather than an exact figure.
Bigger toys call for more lube
When you’re sizing up, lube becomes even more important for keeping things comfortable. A larger toy can create more friction, so use a generous amount and reapply whenever you need to.
Water-based lube is the easy all-rounder. It’s suitable for all toy materials, so you don’t have to second-guess compatibility.
Silicone and oil-based lubes should only be used with materials like metal, glass or ABS plastic. For everything else, stick with water-based. Hybrid lubes may be compatible with some toys, but when in doubt, we recommend sticking with water-based.
How do you clean and care for massive adult toys?
Cleaning a big dildo isn’t wildly different from cleaning any other sex toy, but the extra size can make the whole process a little more awkward. The good news is, the basics are pretty simple.
1. Rinse it first
Start by rinsing away any residue before you reach for your cleaner or soap. If the toy is motorised, switch it off first. For battery-operated toys, consider removing the batteries before cleaning too.
2. Clean it properly
If you’re using a toy cleaner, apply it after rinsing and let it sit for around 30 seconds before rinsing it off again.
Using soap instead? Rinse the toy first, wash it with soap, then rinse thoroughly to make sure no residue is left behind.
Soap itself is suitable for toy materials, but there’s one thing to keep in mind if you’re using your dildo vaginally. Soap residue can interfere with the vagina’s pH balance, so you may prefer to skip soap altogether. If you do use it, stick to non-porous materials such as silicone, metal or glass and rinse especially well afterwards.
3. Let it dry completely
Give your toy plenty of time to air-dry before putting it away. Storing it while it’s still damp can make it harder to keep clean between uses.
4. Store softer toys separately
If your dildo is made from TPE, PVC or jelly, or it’s a non-silicone real-feel toy, pop it into a separate storage bag before putting it away. Keeping these materials away from other toys can help prevent them from reacting with each other and breaking down over time.
5. Apply toy renewing powder
TPE, jelly and other real-feel toys can sometimes become sticky as they age. A toy renewing or refresher powder can help keep the surface feeling better and may help the material last longer.

Ready to see what works for you?
Going bigger should feel like an experiment, not a challenge you have to complete. Maybe you discover that a little extra girth is exactly what you were after. Maybe more length is your thing. Or maybe your current favourite is still doing the job perfectly well.
There’s no “right” size to work your way up to. The fun part is figuring out what you enjoy. Explore Wild Secrets’ range of dildos and see what catches your eye!
